What is on file for my candidate? A file on every member of Congress, governor and 2026 nominee: who funds them, the decisions on their desk, and the sources.
Ken Paxton
Republican, running for U.S. Senate. Now Attorney General of Texas.
Subject: Ken Paxton, Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas, 2026, the sitting Texas attorney general Compiled: October 25, 2026 for the On Point Politics watchdog database, onpointpolitics.us Data cutoff: September 30, 2026 for campaign and super PAC filings, as reported October 15 to 21, 2026. Next scheduled data drop: FEC pre-general report covering through October 14, 2026, and the post-general report due December 3, 2026.
Bottom line up front
Paxton beat Sen. John Cornyn in the May 26 runoff with Donald Trump's endorsement and has been outraised more than three to one since. His campaign raised $18 million from July through September 2026, his best quarter, against Talarico's $64 million, per the Texas Tribune on October 15, 2026, texastribune.org. The race is being carried for him by outside money, and nearly all of it traces to one man.
Four interests combine large money with a decision a Senator Paxton would hold:
- Elon Musk. Musk gave the Senate Leadership Fund $75 million on September 9 and $83 million about two weeks later. SLF moved the same amounts into Texas PAC on the following days. Musk also gave $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC and nearly $90 million to his own America PAC, per the Texas Tribune on October 15, 2026, texastribune.org. Tesla, SpaceX, X and the Boring Company are all based in Texas.
- Senate Republican leadership. SLF said it would spend nearly $200 million in Texas. The ask is a seat in a 53 to 47 Senate.
- Trump world. Trump endorsed Paxton in the primary. MAGA Inc. had $33.7 million in pro-Paxton ads by mid October, and MAHA Action PAC gave $1 million to Lone Star Liberty.
- Texas billionaires, oil and the Cowboys. Farris Wilks and Alex Fairly gave six figure sums to his joint fundraising committee, Chevron's employee PAC gave $200,000 to Lone Star Liberty, and three members of the Jones family gave six figures.
Committee structure and treasurer
The campaign committee and the joint fundraising committee were not identified by name or FEC ID in sources read, and no treasurer was found. Spokesperson Madison Cercy and senior adviser Nick Maddux speak for the campaign.
Outside vehicles:
- Texas PAC, an independent expenditure committee registered in August 2026. It reported $158 million in receipts through September 30, all from other committees, and about $131.53 million in independent expenditures, per The Katy News relaying FEC data on October 21, 2026, thekatynews.com. SLF's Alex Latcham said: "Thanks to some generous investors who have dedicated money to an affiliate, Texas PAC, we've been able to go in and support Ken Paxton."
- Lone Star Liberty PAC, a pro-Paxton super PAC that had $35,000 on hand at the end of June and then spent $17.5 million on broadcast TV in early September.
Bloc: Elon Musk
Documented. Musk gave SLF $75 million on September 9, 2026, the first day of the GOP midterm convention in Dallas. SLF put $75 million into Texas PAC on September 10. About two weeks later Musk gave SLF $83 million, and SLF deposited $83 million into Texas PAC the next day, per the Texas Tribune and KERA, kera.org. Under an agreement with SLF, Musk would give Lone Star Liberty $10 million if SLF gave $5 million and the PAC raised another $5 million. The Katy News lists the Elon Musk Revocable Trust at $10 million on August 21, 2026 and SLF PAC at $5 million on August 24, 2026. America PAC put $18.8 million into the race through October 13, more than 80 percent against Talarico. The Tribune says Musk appears to have poured nearly $190 million into the race. An NRSC email puts his midterm spending at $276 million.
The filings show Musk to SLF and SLF to Texas PAC. They are stored as two edges, not as Musk to Texas PAC.
What he wants. No stated ask was found. Musk has moved the incorporation of many of his companies to Texas. As attorney general, Paxton opened a 2022 investigation of Twitter's bot count reporting and a 2024 probe of the World Federation of Advertisers. He did not publicly answer a January 2026 call from Democratic lawmakers to investigate Grok.
What Paxton has said. He has not commented on Musk's support. In 2024 he said of Musk: "Aren't you all glad he's on our side?"
Inference: The 2022 Twitter probe and the 2024 advertiser probe both lined up with Musk's own public fights. The Grok silence came months before Musk funded the race. This is a pattern of dates, not a documented exchange.
Bloc: Senate Republican leadership
Documented. Texas PAC is connected to Majority Leader John Thune, per the Texas Tribune on October 1, 2026, texastribune.org. Before the primary, SLF estimated a Paxton candidacy would need $150 million to $200 million to hold the seat. Republicans spent $122 million in September alone and reserved $66 million more through Election Day, per AdImpact as relayed by the Tribune. Outside groups led by SLF had spent over $217 million on ads by the end of September.
Inference: SLF spent heavily for Cornyn in the primary and now carries Paxton. The leadership that opposed him will own a large share of his win if he wins.
Bloc: Trump world
Documented. Trump endorsed Paxton over Cornyn. MAGA Inc. had nearly $24 million in Texas ads by October 1 and $33.7 million by October 15, per AdImpact as relayed by the Tribune. MAHA Action PAC gave Lone Star Liberty $1 million on September 16, 2026, per The Katy News.
Bloc: Texas billionaires, oil and the Cowboys
Documented. Farris Wilks, a West Texas oil billionaire, gave $250,000 to a Paxton joint fundraising committee in mid August. Alex Fairly, an Amarillo billionaire, gave $7,000 to the campaign in the spring and $274,300 to the joint committee in late August. Cowboys president Stephen Jones gave $122,000 and Jerry Jones Jr. $100,000 this quarter. Jerry Jones gave a six figure sum in the second quarter, all per the Texas Tribune on October 15. Lone Star Liberty donors in the third quarter included Preserve Texas Inc. at $400,000, Russell Gordy and Buckeye Victory Action Inc. at $250,000 each, the Chevron Employees Political Action Committee at $200,000, and GEO Reentry Services LLC, the Khoury trust and Margaret Molleston at $100,000 each, per The Katy News.
Inference: The GEO Reentry gift ties a detention and reentry vendor to the super PAC of a candidate who would vote on immigration enforcement funding. Its parent company was not verified in this pass.
Own finances and disclosure history
Forbes estimated his net worth at about $13 million on August 6, 2026, mostly real estate, forbes.com. Forbes counts at least 14 properties in five states worth about $10 million, about $4.7 million in debt, four resort condos in Ivins, Utah, a Broken Bow, Oklahoma cabin, and a stake in Premier Vertical Properties, a cell tower firm co-owned with Richard Sine that pays $100,000 to $1 million a year in lease income.
The Texas Tribune and ProPublica reported on September 4, 2026 that his federal disclosure, filed in August after a three month extension, listed seven homes but no rental income, though six had rental listings, texastribune.org. It left out three Utah condo mortgages totaling $1.3 million and seven properties worth about $5.2 million. The Oklahoma lodge moved from $100,001 to $250,000 to $1 million to $5 million in value. His reported net worth range rose from negative $1.9 million to $11.1 million, to $1 million to $27 million. Experts from Public Citizen, the Campaign Legal Center and CREW questioned the filing. Spokesperson Madison Cercy called it "a bad attempt to manufacture controversy where none exists." No formal complaint was reported.
Enforcement and controversies
- Securities fraud case. Paxton paid nearly $300,000 in restitution and the case ended in 2024 without a conviction, per AP via NBC DFW on July 27, 2026, nbcdfw.com.
- Impeachment. The Texas House impeached him in 2023 over alleged abuse of office. The Texas Senate acquitted him on all charges.
- Federal investigation. Investigators examined alleged abuse of office to benefit an Austin real estate developer, bribes, and retaliation against whistleblower employees. The Justice Department declined to prosecute in 2024.
- Waco plea case. Talarico says a 2026 misdemeanor plea in a case handled by Paxton's office shows preferential treatment. Prosecutors said the victim did not want to testify again.
- Paxton's response throughout: he casts himself as a target of political persecution. Cercy said critics keep pushing accusations "even after they are completely acquitted of wrongdoing."
