What is on file for my candidate? A file on every member of Congress, governor and 2026 nominee: who funds them, the decisions on their desk, and the sources.
Josh Turek
Democrat, running for U.S. Senate. Now State Representative.
Subject: Josh Turek, Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Iowa, 2026, state representative Compiled: October 25, 2026 for the On Point Politics watchdog database, onpointpolitics.us Data cutoff: October 24, 2026. The latest candidate figures found are second quarter 2026 FEC reports through June 30, 2026. Next scheduled data drop: FEC pre-general report covering through October 14, 2026, which was not found in this pass, then the post-general report due December 3, 2026.
Bottom line up front
Turek is a small donor candidate carried by national Democratic outside money. He raised $6,276,527 through June 30, 2026 and outraised Ashley Hinson in the second quarter, $2,813,428 to $2,059,828, but held $2,362,314 in cash against her $6,749,491, per Little Village on July 17, 2026, littlevillagemag.com.
Three interests combine real money with a decision he would touch:
- National Democratic leadership. Senate Majority PAC reserved $13.4 million in May and added $17 million on July 23, 2026. Chuck Schumer's leadership PAC gave him the maximum. The decision is which party organizes the Senate in January 2027.
- VoteVets. Its super PAC spent about $10 million to win him the June 2 primary, more than both campaigns combined. He says he wants dark money out of politics.
- Small donors. The campaign claims nearly 53,000 donors averaging $33. No single donor has measurable leverage.
Committee structure and treasurer
The principal campaign committee's name, FEC ID and treasurer were not verified in this pass, and the roster has no FEC ID for him. No leadership PAC or joint fundraising committee was found. His only government income found is the Iowa House per diem.
Scale. He raised roughly $678,000 in the fourth quarter of 2025 and ended the year with $398,474, per the Cedar Rapids Gazette, thegazette.com. He raised $1,122,303 in the first quarter and $2,813,428 in the second, per Little Village.
National Democratic leadership
Documented. Schumer's leadership PAC gave the maximum allowable gift before the primary, per the Washington Sun on June 2, 2026, washingtonsun.com. Groups tied to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand also gave, per Scripps on June 2, 2026, abc15.com. Senate Majority PAC reserved $13.4 million of fall television in May and announced $17 million more on July 23, 2026. It says the ads focus on Hinson's votes on prices, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act's Medicaid cuts and tariffs, per the Carroll Times Herald reprinting Iowa Capital Dispatch, carrollspaper.com. Its nonprofit arm, Majority Forward, runs separate health care ads.
What they want. A Senate majority. The NRSC answered on primary night with an ad calling him Chuck Schumer's puppet.
Inference: The money that matters most to Turek is not given to him. It is spent for him by committees tied to Senate Democratic leadership, so the leader vote in January 2027 is the decision those committees care about. He has not said publicly how he would cast it in sources read.
VoteVets
Documented. VoteVets spent about $10 million in the primary, while Turek and Zach Wahls each spent about $1.5 million on ads per AdImpact, per the Washington Sun. The Washington Free Beacon counted nearly $9 million in FEC filings on May 18, 2026. It reported that Senate Majority PAC has given VoteVets about $31 million since 2014, and that Senate Majority PAC says it sent nothing this cycle, freebeacon.com. On May 1, 2026 he missed a House vote on HF 2782, a veterans appropriation, around a VoteVets Action Fund event he had promoted. His spokesperson said the vote was rescheduled four times and 17 members of both parties missed it.
What he said. He wants to see all dark money groups get out of politics and says VoteVets decided to support him without coordination.
Inference: The hop two chain is Senate Majority PAC to VoteVets and VoteVets to Turek's race. This file does not store Senate Majority PAC to Turek through VoteVets, because no filing shows that chain this cycle.
Small donors
Documented. The campaign claimed nearly 53,000 individual donors with a $33 average, per the Telegraph Herald on May 14, 2026, telegraphherald.com. Fox News reported $43,000 raised from Southern California donors from March 25 to 31 and $36,500 from Washington donors from February 17 to March 23, 2026, foxnews.com.
Inference: The broad base limits any single donor's leverage. The out of state events are what opponents use to tie his fundraising to his missed votes.
Own finances and disclosure history
No Senate candidate financial disclosure was read. Fox reports about $20,100 in tax free legislative per diem at $201 a day, which state law allows. His background, per Ballotpedia News on August 6, 2026, news.ballotpedia.org, is a former professional wheelchair basketball player and Paralympic medalist. He won his first House race by six votes and was reelected by five points.
Enforcement and controversies
- No FEC or ethics complaint against Turek was found in sources read.
- Missed votes. Fox News reported on July 8, 2026 that he missed 261 House votes from January 12 to May 3, 2026, nearly 60 percent. His campaign said the pattern is not unique, pointed to Hinson missing part of a June 24 defense markup for a fundraiser, and called him one of Iowa's most bipartisan lawmakers.
- The Senate Leadership Fund flew a State Fair banner on August 17 saying he was in Nantucket and ran an ad saying he is only showing up for himself, per Bleeding Heartland on August 24, 2026, bleedingheartland.com.
