What is on file for my candidate? A file on every member of Congress, governor and 2026 nominee: who funds them, the decisions on their desk, and the sources.
Dan Osborn
Independent, running for U.S. Senate. Not in office now.
Subject: Dan Osborn, nonpartisan candidate for U.S. Senate in Nebraska, 2026, former labor leader Compiled: October 25, 2026 for the On Point Politics watchdog database, onpointpolitics.us Data cutoff: October 24, 2026. Candidate figures run through June 30, 2026; outside spending through October 13, 2026. Next scheduled data drop: FEC pre-general report covering through October 14, 2026, not read in this pass, then the post-general report due December 3, 2026.
Bottom line up front
Osborn is a small donor independent with no party committee, a ring of his own PACs, and about $12.8 million of outside help from groups that were not named in sources read. He raised $5.7 million through June 30, 2026 and held $2.4 million in cash, per the Nebraska Examiner on July 28, 2026, nebraskaexaminer.com. Polls in late September and early October ranged from Osborn up 4 to Ricketts up 5, per Newsweek on October 17, 2026, newsweek.com.
Three interests combine money with a decision:
- Small donors. He claims about 71,000 donors averaging about $40. Most small gifts come from California and New York; his largest individual donors are Nebraskans.
- Outside groups. Six groups reported $12.8 million for him through October 13. The decision is the Senate organizing vote, where he pledges to caucus with no one.
- Labor. He is a former union leader, the postal workers' committee gave, and his platform targets corporate tax loopholes and tariff power.
The enforcement thread matters as much as the money. Two FEC complaints allege his campaign and PACs paid relatives and shared staff to dodge limits. He calls them baseless.
Committee structure and treasurer
The principal committee name, FEC ID and treasurer were not verified. He founded the Working Class Heroes Fund, a hybrid PAC with a limited hard money account and an unlimited soft money account. The April 2026 complaint says his wife manages it and a sister-in-law is treasurer, per Nebraska Public Media on April 14, 2026, nebraskapublicmedia.org. A March complaint says he also controls the League of Labor Voters.
Scale. $1.2 million in the first quarter with $939,146 cash, per the Nebraska Examiner on April 28, 2026, corrected April 29, nebraskaexaminer.com. About $1.9 million in the second quarter.
Small donors
Documented. He told the State Fair debate on September 1 that he has about 71,000 donors averaging about $40, per the Nebraska Examiner, newsfromthestates.com. The Ricketts campaign says about 72 percent of second quarter money came through ActBlue and over 83 percent of itemized money came from outside Nebraska, per Rural Radio on July 21, 2026, ruralradio.com. Those are opponent figures.
Inference: The out of state share is what lets Republicans call him a Democrat in disguise. It is also why no single donor has leverage over him.
Outside groups
Documented. Six outside groups reported $12.8 million supporting him through October 13. FEC records through October 1 show $7.3 million opposing Ricketts or backing Osborn, against $7.9 million the other way. The Senate Leadership Fund committed $15 million for Ricketts through Cornhusker Majority, with $7 million spent, per Newsweek. Osborn acknowledged that some dark money ads help him but did not name the groups.
Inference: The money spent for him exceeds what his campaign raised. The funders are the biggest unknown in this file.
Labor unions
Documented. The American Postal Workers Union Committee gave $5,000 in the first quarter. The Nebraska Farmers Union endorsed him. His platform would return tariff power to Congress and close corporate tax loopholes, per the debate coverage.
Own finances and disclosure history
His disclosure was not read. The campaign paid him a $2,479.05 salary in the first quarter, which federal rules allow. His wife Megan Osborn, a political consultant who now works full time on the campaign, was paid $15,878.97 that quarter, per the Nebraska Examiner. She joined as operations manager at $8,000 a month and divested her stake in Independent Campaigns LLC in April 2026, per Fox News on April 3, 2026, foxnews.com.
Enforcement and controversies
- Americans for Public Trust complaint, filed March 23, 2026. It alleges the campaign and two PACs paid relatives and their firms above market rates, with close to $300,000 to his wife in total and nearly $200,000 to Independent Campaigns LLC. Osborn says the payments matched fair market rates, and his spokesperson called the concerns a joke. Pending. Status Contested.
- Jeffrey Davis complaint, announced April 14, 2026. Davis chairs the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission and was appointed by Ricketts, but says he acted privately. He alleges the PAC's soft money paid 23 campaign staffers, over $103,000, alongside the campaign's $101,000, from June to December 2025. The campaign called it a bogus effort by Ricketts allies. Pending.
- Ricketts said at the debate he has footage of Osborn comparing law enforcement to Nazi Germany. Osborn said he did not know what Ricketts meant.
